Paul Ryan and Ben Quilty in studio, 2010

Arts Live Media is currently producing an independent documentary, No Country For Dreaming, about the Australian artist, Paul Ryan and the lead up to 2011 Archibald Prize, at the Art Gallery of NSW, Sydney. Paul Ryan is gaining a significant reputation in the Australian art world, having recently won two major prizes and gaining recognition for his dark and moody landscape paintings of the Illawarra escarpment in NSW. Paul Ryan is represented by Rex Irwin Art Dealer in Sydney, Australia.

Paul Ryan’s recent exhibition of paintings, No Country For Dreaming, opened to controversy in November 2010 around the issues of a non-Indigenous artist portraying aspects of the history of colonisation in Australia. The documentary will look at Paul Ryan’s work, the development of his art practice and process, his relationship to the landscape and the place he grew up in the Illawarra, NSW. A significant focus of this documentary is to open a dialogue between Indigenous and non-Indigenous community members and artists regarding issues of Australian history and the often problematic process of interpreting first contact.

Paul Ryan, Another World

The documentary will explore Paul Ryan’s friendships with other well-known Australian artists, such as Ben Quilty (the subject for his 2011 Archibald Prize painting) and Richard Tognetti, the renown Australian musician and artistic director of the Australian Chamber Orchestra.
